Students looking for a resume-worthy spring volunteer opportunity can apply to be student coordinators for the first Queer Youth Leadership Summit, to be hosted by NC State’s GLBT Center on February 17, 2018.

Called QYLS (“quills”) for short, the summit will be a full day of workshops, panels, action planning, coalition building and advocacy work that will give 75-100 high school students from across Wake and Durham counties the tools necessary to strengthen their impact on their local high school communities and create a more socially-just world.

Student coordinators will play an essential part in helping QYLS participants build connections with other pre-college students, build skills for social justice advocacy and learn about resources that have helped NC State students transition to college. Student coordinators will facilitate and assist a small group of 8-10 participants as they complete short- and long-term action plans to enact change in their local communities.

Student coordinators will experience working with youth between the ages  of 15 to 18 in small group settings, gain hands-on experience coordinating a major community-engagement event, receive training on the safety and protection of minors and participate in team-building with peers who are also dedicated to social justice and leadership

Applicants must attend all three trainings, which will take place on January 25, 2018 from 6;00-7:00 p.m., February 8, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and  February 15, 2018, 6:00-7:00 p.m. Students are advised to know their spring course schedules before applying; it is also important to note that all student coordinators must complete a background check, conduct check and reference check to participate in QYLS. The GLBT Center will accept applications through November 3, 2017 and select 10-12 student coordinators by November 15, 2017. Applicants will be notified by November 20, 2017. The center will initiate background and conduct checks for selected coordinators by December 1, 2017.
