You Are Invited… to a Live Museum

Blacks in Wax Live Museum 2017

Each year, Witherspoon Student Center is transformed into a spectacular series of live characters who portray significant leaders, educators, entertainers and more from African American history and culture. The African American Cultural Center (AACC) and AYA Ambassadors are preparing for the 11th annual Blacks In Wax Live Museum, which will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members are invited to take on the persona of an influential figure from the past or present and recite a biographical monologue highlighting the distinct contributions of that person. Led by a student tour guide, attendees journey through the museum floor by floor, listening, learning and observing the incredible talents of prominent African Americans and social movement leaders.

It is our goal to connect African American history to the present. We want attendees to reflect on the African proverbs and values we teach in the AACC and their importance in our world today. We ensure that this program provides insight into the adversity that Black people have endured, yet also the strength, brilliance and creativity embodied by these leaders. This is a celebration of culture and an appreciation of history! Those planning to attend should prepare to be actively engaged, reflect deeply and join us in recognizing those who inspire our future.

The annual Blacks In Wax Live Museum has served as an opportunity to engage with the local community for over a decade and we are proud to introduce some new features. This year, we have partnered with Step Up Ministry to host a drive of needed supplies. While the annual Blacks In Wax Live Museum is free and open to the public, we encourage attendees to bring a boxed or canned good, toiletry item or monetary donation. All proceeds will benefit families engaged with any of the 7 programs supported by Step Up Ministry. Additionally, we always look forward to welcoming students, teachers, children and parents as they arrive. We anticipate many schools, community agencies and faith groups to bring large numbers of attendees. Groups can sign up ahead of time to reserve a tour time.
