The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity welcomes Dr. Linda McCabe Smith, who was appointed NC State’s vice provost for institutional equity and diversity effective August 1. Dr. Smith replaces Amy Circosta, who served as interim vice provost during 2015-16.
Dr. Smith comes to NC State from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, where she held the post of associate chancellor for institutional diversity from 2009-2016 and, prior to that, served as interim associate dean in SIU-Carbondale’s College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. However, Dr. Smith is not new to North Carolina. A native of Havelock, NC, she earned a master’s degree in speech-language and hearing pathology and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from North Carolina Central University before going on to earn a doctorate in speech-language and hearing pathology from SIU Carbondale. Dr. Smith’s certifications include affirmative action professional and campus Title IX coordinator and administrator. At NC State, she will also serve as NC State’s chief diversity officer and Title IX coordinator.
When asked her impression of NC State thus far, Dr. Smith stated, “NC State has really been welcoming on many levels, and my experience within my first three weeks has been one of southern hospitality.”
NC State’s Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity includes the Equal Opportunity and Equity and Diversity and Inclusion units, housed in Winslow Hall, as well as four campus community centers: the GLBT Center, Multicultural Student Affairs and the Women’s Center, which are housed in Talley Student Union, and the African American Cultural Center, located in Witherspoon Student Center.
The office provides a wide array of services to the campus community, including affirmative action, ADA and Title IX compliance, discrimination and harassment prevention and response and a wide array of diversity and inclusion initiatives for students, faculty and staff. OIED’s units also host over 150 diversity and equity programs throughout the year. See our Signature Events for a listing of our major events, which are generally free and open to the public.
