Getting Started with Student Accommodations

In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), NC State has designated the Disability Resource Office (DRO) as the authorized office to receive documentation and determine eligibility for appropriate accommodations (appropriate academic adjustments, auxiliary aids and modifications to policies/procedures) for students on the basis of disability.

Accommodations are intended to mitigate institutional barriers for a qualified individual to have equal opportunities for participation. They are determined individually through an interactive process that considers the following: each individual’s functional limitations, history, and request, as well as the essential elements of NC State University programs, services, and activities.

Step 1: Submit a Request for Accommodations

  • New Requests: Complete the Student Disclosure Form.
  • Requests for Additional Accommodation: Email disability@ncsu.edu with your request.
  • Temporary Conditions: If experiencing a temporary condition, please view information below.

Navigating a Short-Term Impairment

Students with a temporary or short -term impairment that limits a major life activity such as a broken arm, concussion, surgery recovery, etc. may seek assistance in meeting course requirements after communicating with instructors. You may be referred to the DRO if the instructor and/or department is unable to provide a solution. You should contact DRO via email (disability@ncsu.edu) explaining how DRO can assist after the discussion with instructors.  For additional resources please review the Short-Term Impairment checklist.

Step 2: Submit Documentation of Disability or Request a Meeting:

  • Option 1 Disability Documentation: Students may choose to submit readily available documentation meeting guidelines. Students requesting accommodations within University Housing (including service animals or emotional support animals) should also review Accommodations within University Housing for additional information.
  • Option 2 Connection Meeting: Students may request a connection meeting (email disability@ncsu.edu) to discuss their disability, what accommodation to request, disability-related barriers and challenges experienced, the request process, disability documentation, and resources available at NC State. Documentation submitted during Connection Meetings will be reviewed in the eligibility process after the conclusion of the meeting.

Step 3: Access Planning

Disability Resource staff determine appropriate accommodations supported, if applicable and will work with students on an individualized basis to determine additional appropriate resources. Students will be notified of the status of their requests via NC State email. Students are responsible for regularly checking their NC State email and expected to complete the applicable next steps outlined.

Step 4: Accommodation Requests Timing

Students are encouraged to connect with the DRO once they have accepted admission or are enrolled in an academic course at NC State. Generally, accommodations are not retroactive or applied to historical activities/tasks. Once the request for accommodations and appropriate documentation are received, every effort will be made to determine eligibility status within 10 business days of submission. However, to ensure academic accommodations can be utilized within the current semester, students should complete this process and have sent their accommodation letters a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the last day of classes.
