Students often call the campus community centers their “home away from home” for the fellowship, support and resources they provide. Students enjoy dropping in and meeting friends there in addition to attending programs and meeting with staff members.
To make it easier for students to access the support they may need, all four centers — the African American Cultural Center, the GLBT Center, Multicultural Student Affairs and the Women’s Center — bring in professionals from other campus offices on a regular basis, enabling students to take advantage of needed services in a familiar place.
Conversations with a Counselor
One such opportunity is a weekly two-hour session in each of the campus community centers called “Conversations with a Counselor,” during which a licensed counselor from NC State’s Counseling Center holds office hours in that center.
According to the The University Network, college counseling is a critical service for students. “Good mental health is vital for a successful college experience. Trying to balance school, work, relationships or other personal issues could easily cause a student stress.”
Students can make an appointment or drop-in to speak with a counselor on a first-come, first-served basis. The Counseling Center provides confidential services for both individuals and groups. Students can also speak anonymously if they don’t wish to identify themselves.
Hours for fall semester are as follows:
- Mondays from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Women’s Center, Talley Student Union, Suite 5210;
- Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m in the African American Cultural Center, Witherspoon Student Center, Suite 355;
- Tuesdays from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the GLBT Center, Talley Student Union, Suite 5230;
- Thursdays from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. in Multicultural Student Affairs, Talley Student Union, Suite 4261.
If You Need Counseling Outside of These Hours
The Counseling Center is open year-round on the second floor of the Student Health Center at 2815 Cates Avenue near Dan Allen Drive for students who need to speak to someone at other times. Emergency counseling service is available twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. Students who need a counselor outside of business hours can call 919.515.2423 and select the option to speak with the counselor on call. They will take your number, and the counselor on call will contact you right away.
