Ebony Harlem Awards to Celebrate 25th Anniversary
The Ebony Harlem Awards of Excellence is the annual celebration of Black excellence at NC State. The event began in 1993, making this year’s 25th anniversary the continuation of a legacy of student impact and collaboration.
The Mixtape Series: For Black Students Navigating White Spaces
The African American Cultural Center will host a trilogy of events in March called “The Mixtape Series: For Black Students Navigating White Spaces.” The series aims to allow students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, to network and connect through honest dialogue.
“The Politics of Black Hair” Opens; Exhibit to Run Through March 21
The Women's Center and the African American Cultural Center have partnered to bring "The Politics of Black Hair" to NC State. The exhibit will run through March 21, 2018 in the African American Cultural Center Gallery on the second floor of Witherspoon Student Center.
Alonzo Fullenwilder Excels in Multiple Roles
Alonzo Fullenwilder, a senior in mechanical engineering with a minor in African studies, is from Wilmington, North Carolina. He began working in the African American Cultural Center in August. He also serves as president of the Xi Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Multicultural Student Affairs volunteer ambassador and chancellor’s aide.
Campus Community Centers to Host Social Justice January
The OIED Campus Community Centers will host the fourth annual Social Justice January later this month. This collaborative annual event co-hosted by the GLBT Center, Women’s Center, Multicultural Student Affairs and African American Cultural Center aims to engage the campus community in critical conversations about contemporary social justice issues that impact multiple communities.
Finding Community and More in the African American Cultural Center
Gwen Hopper, one of the African American Cultural Center’s office assistants, is a sophomore majoring in chemistry from Gastonia. She began working in the AACC this past August. “I wanted to work somewhere that had a community,” Hopper said.
African American Cultural Center Welcomes Ronschall Love
Ronschall Love is the new program assistant in the African American Cultural Center. Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Love attended Elohim Bible College, St. Louis, Missouri, where she studied theology and earned a master's of arts in Christian counseling. Before coming to NC State, Love worked for the federal government as a program coordinator for the Department of the Army in the Mission Support Office based in Kansas City, Missouri.
Nubian Message Prepares for 25th Anniversary Celebration
Representing the African-American voice in media at NC State, the Nubian Message will celebrate its 25th anniversary on November 30, 2017. Austin Butler interviewed Editor-In-Chief Anahzsa Jones, a senior in English with a concentration in creative writing from Brooklyn, New York, to find out how the publication plans to celebrate.
Voting Rights Expert Gilda Daniels First Speaker of NOW Series on Race
The African American Cultural Center kicked off its NOW Series to promote critical discussions on topics related to race on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, with University of Baltimore School of Law professor Gilda Daniels, who shared her knowledge on race, voting and power. Daniels, a voting rights expert and former deputy chief in the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Voting Section under the Clinton and Bush administrations, focuses on the intersections of race, law and democracy.
