NC State will welcome BloomHomie, a group of homies reimagining masculinity and inspiring other men to do the same, as the 2019 Latinx Heritage Month keynote speakers. In their own words:
We curate online content that deconstructs and reimagines masculinity in a way that encourages expression, empathy, allyship, self-awareness and advocacy. Our content is accessible to anyone and is especially catered toward men of color like ourselves. We are men focusing on men’s issues with a commitment to helping men heal past traumas that inhibit them from recognizing their full humanity and the full humanity in others. We are men focused on combating rape culture and the broader culture of violence against women.
Workshop
Two community events will feature BloomHomie: The first will be a daytime workshop on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 3222 that will center the experiences of men of color. Lunch will be provided for this event. The men of BloomHomie will guide students through conversations about defining their own masculinity.
Keynote Address and Open Mic Night
The second event is open to the entire campus community in the Mountains Ballroom, Talley Student Union on October 15, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. We will combine our annual open mic night with the Women’s Center, Café Con Leche, and a keynote address by BloomHomie. Their leaders will be speaking briefly about their mission and then transition into an open mic event for all to present. We ask students, faculty and staff to join in and share their various forms of expression with us that evening. If you would like to perform, please sign up at go.ncsu.edu/CafeConLeche.
