Think and “DEW” – Together
October marks the time when students, faculty and staff come together to engage in dialogue, programs and workshops centered on diversity, inclusion, cultural competence, social justice, global awareness and more. Numerous NC State student groups and university departments host a range of programs that span a vast array of topics over the seven-day week. Each year, both the quality and interest in DEW programs increases.
This year’s theme is Think and “DEW” – Together. We think and do best together when we embrace diverse people and perspectives. To successfully solve the grand challenges in our world, we must ensure that our engagement builds on the accessibility and inclusion that furthers innovation and excellence at NC State. Join us!
This Year’s Highlights
Some highlights to expect in DEW 2017 include:
- The RACE: Are We So Different? interactive exhibit is a project of the American Anthropological Association, with funding from the Ford Foundation and the National Science Foundation. What does the word “race” mean to you? This exhibition looks at race through the lenses of science, history and personal experiences to promote a better understanding of human variation. It tells the stories of race from biological, cultural and historical points of view, offering an unprecedented look at race and racism in the United States. The exhibit is located at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at 11 West Jones Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.
- The annual Fall Diversity Dialogue featuring Franchesca Ramsey speaking about “Your Powerful Online Voice: Social Media for Social Change” will take place on Monday, October 23, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Cinema. Franchesca Ramsey is the host of MTV’s Decoded and whose career began with a viral video. Hear the story about how it changed her life, kick-started her career and helped her become a leading voice for social justice. Ramsey will also discuss what she has learned along the way and how it can help all of us amplify our voices for social change. She covers race, gender, feminism and equality in America with her unique brand of information-via-comedy through a platform that continues to change the way we talk about things that matter. This is a free, non-ticketed, first-come, first-seated event.
- The deeply affecting play, Exonerated, combines first-person narrative with legal records to tell the stories of six wrongfully convicted inmates and their paths to freedom. There will be five showings of the play, which explores the lives of the freed convicts after being sentenced to death, including the legal proceedings that gained their exoneration. This event is sponsored by University Theatre. See the DEW guide for showtimes and locations.
These are just a few of more than thirty DEW 2017 programs and events.
