As part of an increased emphasis on research, the Women’s Center presented its first Gender and Equity Research Symposium on Tuesday, March 25, 2017 in Talley Student Union.

Organized by doctoral student Angela Gay, the event included opening and lunch presentations and three poster presentation sessions. The research posters, presented by faculty, administrators and students from all disciplines, aimed to spotlight research that promotes a more equitable and justice-oriented society and included the following entries:

• “Understanding Students’ Debt/Loan Experience,” presented by Mian Wu and Joanne Caye, NC State (1st place)
• “Exploring the Relationship Between the ‘It’s on Us’ Sexual Assault Prevention Campaign and Students’ Active Bystander Practices,” presented by Winn Decker and Dr. Tiffany J. Davis, NC State (2nd place)
• “Viewing Community College Student Completion through Multiple Lenses,” presented by Heidi McCann, NC State (3rd place)
• “Asset-Based Community Needs Assessment for the Raleigh Latino Community,” presented by Allie Johnson, NC State
• “The Effects of Customized Individual Counseling Interventions on the Career and College Readiness of Adolescents in the Foster Care System,” presented by Dr. Regina Gavin Williams, NC State
• “Examining the Effects of Faculty Diversity at the Top 200 Universities and Colleges on Undergraduate Student Retention and Graduation Rates,” presented by Tierra Knight, Karen Son and Dr. Elan Hope, NC State
• “Inherent Bias in Library Classification and Tips for Scholarly Research,” presented by Hannah Riley and Cindy Levine, NC State
• “Pedagogy, Leadership and Gender in Public Relations,” presented by Elizabeth Muckensturm and Dr, Prisca S, Ngondo, NC State
• “Understanding the Decision-Making Process of Students of Color to Participate in Sustainability Programs,” presented by Rebekah Dunstan and Grace Sugg, NC State
• “Global Issues,” “Masculinity,” and “Wellness,” presented by the Women’s Center Action Teams, NC State

Dr. Elizabeth Nelson, associate professor of Women’s and Gender Studies, was the opening speaker. Dr. Karey Harwood, associate professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies, and Dr. Rhonda Sutton, director of College Leadership Programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and former Women’s Center director, were the lunch speakers. Vice Provost Linda McCabe Smith, Senior Director of Campus Community Centers Reggie Barnes, and Women’s Center Director Lisa Barbera-Mascote also spoke.
