The annual Sisterhood Dinner has been a well-known tradition on campus for over thirty years. The 2019 dinner brought together nearly 600 members of the campus community to celebrate the achievements of women at NC State. In past years, the event has been near and dear to many on campus, beginning with an evening reception an silent auction to benefit the Women’s Center, a full dinner and culminating with a keynote speaker, performances and the presenting of the annual Equity for Women Awards.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we will not hold the dinner as usual. However, we invite you to join us online for the Sisterhood Celebration, which will celebrate virtually with a theme that has resonated with us this year.

“Normal Never Was”

The past year has been one filled with challenges and hardships. While these have not been the same for each person, we must acknowledge the harm that has come over the past year – some of which has been occurring for generations – before we can consider moving forward.  Many are seeking to return our society back to normal; in recognizing the impact of facing multiple pandemics at once, we recognize that normal can never be as it once was and that the perception of normal is one interwoven in a framework of misogyny and racism.

The theme for this year’s 36th annual Sisterhood Dinner will be “Normal Never Was,” based on the writings of poet, activist and author Sonya Renee Taylor, who spoke at NC State before the pandemic. We hope to acknowledge these difficult times while also celebrating the work of incredible people at our university and beginning to rethink normal in a shared space.
