As October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it is important to remind the campus community that NC State strives to ensure that students, faculty, staff and visitors are safe and free from any form of dating violence, domestic violence or interpersonal violence.
Should you experience or witness any type of dating, domestic or interpersonal violence, you have the option to file a report with NC State University and/or the police (e.g, NC State Police or local municipality).
Filing a report helps to inform the university of concerning behavior or conduct impacting our community and permits outreach to those directly impacted to promote their safety and well-being. It also initiates discussion of supportive measures that may be available and enables us to provide information regarding further action and response.
You can choose to file a report with the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity that may lead to either a university resolution or investigation. You can also choose to file a report with the Police that will lead to a criminal investigation. Your options include, but are not limited to, the following.
File with the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED)
Reporting dating or domestic violence to OIED’s Equal Opportunity and Equity unit (EOE) helps to provide official notice to the university that an incident has occurred. NC State takes interpersonal violence very seriously, and notice to the university ensures that trained individuals can respond appropriately to any threats or safety concerns on campus.
A report may be filed by the person who experienced harm, someone who witnessed the harm, a Responsible Employee, Title IX designated official, or by an anonymous person.
Upon receipt of the report, the information will be carefully assessed to determine the safety of those involved and of the campus community. EOE will provide information and support to those parties, including discussing supportive measures, community resources and options for resolution.
Any person may make a report at any time, including during non-business hours, regarding discrimination, harassment or retaliation (whether or not the person reporting is the person impacted by the alleged conduct) through any of the following means:
- in person by speaking to the vice provost for institutional equity and diversity, or to any of the EOE investigators (whose offices are located in OIED);
- by delivering, mailing or otherwise transmitting a report to OIED;
- by calling OIED at 919.513.0574;
- by emailing the report to equalopportunity@ncsu.edu;
- by completing the OIED online Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation Report Form; or
- through any other means that results in the vice provost for institutional equity and diversity receiving the person’s verbal or written report.
File with NC State Police
NC State Police or other area law enforcement agencies can provide support, emergency response and information regarding criminal charges and protective orders.
You are not required to file a report to law enforcement; however, if you believe a crime has occurred, you are encouraged to report the incident. If you wish, the Equal Opportunity and Equity unit (EOE) of OIED can provide assistance in reporting to the police.

Reporting Anonymously
You have the option to file an anonymous report to both NC State Police and OIED’s Equal Opportunity and Equity, which can receive anonymous reports of dating, domestic and interpersonal violence by withholding identifying information (name and contact information) of the individual when reporting the concern.
However, please note that NC State’s ability to respond or take further action may be impacted by the level of information available about the incident or the individuals involved. Title IX designated officials and Responsible Employees who are reporting a disclosure of discrimination, harassment and/or retaliation are unable to do so anonymously except in instances when they have personally experienced the reported misconduct directly.
