Are you looking for a spring volunteer opportunity worthy of your résumé? Apply to be a student coordinator for the second Queer Youth Leadership Summit hosted by the GLBT Center.
Called QYLS (“quills”) for short, this full day of workshops, panels, action planning, coalition building and advocacy work will give 75-100 high school students from across North Carolina the tools necessary to strengthen their impact on their local high school community and create a more socially-just world.
Student Coordinators play an essential part in helping QYLS participants build connections with other pre-college students, build skills for social justice advocacy and learn about resources that have helped NC State students transition to college. As a student coordinator, you will facilitate and assist a small group of 8-10 participants as they complete short-term and long-term action plans to enact change in their local communities.
What will you get out of QYLS as a student coordinator?
-
Experience working with youth (ages 15-18) in small group settings
-
Hands-on experience coordinating a major community-engagement event
-
Resume-worthy training on the safety and protection of minors
- Team-building with peers who are also dedicated to social justice and leadership
Sound interesting? Fill out an application. It is important to know your spring 2019 course schedule before applying, as there are three required training dates for student coordinators. You must attend all three trainings. The dates are:
- January 10, 2019 from 6pm-7pm
- January 17, 2019 from 6pm-8pm
- January 31, 2019 from 6pm-7pm
The Queer Youth Leadership Summit will occur on Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Depending on your selected shift, you may not be needed as early as 7:30 a.m. or as late as 6:00 p.m. We will work with all the student coordinators as a group to decide who does what and when.
It is also important to note that all student coordinators must complete a background check, conduct check and reference check to participate in QYLS. If you have any questions about the volunteer application process, please contact Andy DeRoin (aederoin@ncsu.edu) or Preston Keith (pbkeith2@ncsu.edu) for more information.
We will collect applications from October 29 – November 16, 2018. We will select 10-12 student coordinators. You will be notified of our decision by November 23, 2018. If you accept your position as a student coordinator, we will initiate the background check/conduct check by December 1, 2018.
