The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity has published its 2017-18 annual report. The report highlights accomplishments from the past year for each of the office’s units, which include Equal Opportunity and Equity; Diversity Engagement, Training and Education; the four campus community centers: the African American Cultural Center, GLBT Center, Multicultural Student Affairs and the Women’s Center; and the Bias Impact Response Team.
Covering all of our major training and education initiatives, ranging from equal opportunity compliance workshops to diversity education offerings and the award-winning Equal Opportunity Institute, the report documents steady growth in the office’s reach throughout the campus community, creating positive impacts among students, staff and faculty throughout the university.
The report also details the large array of programs and initiatives undertaken and/or continued last year by the office, including the many activities of the National Coalition Building Institute campus team, the Cultural Competence Training Initiative, the Diversity Mini-Grant Program, the Building Future Faculty Program, African Diaspora Film Series, GLBT Advocate Program, Cultural Heritage Month Celebrations and the Gender and Equity Research Symposium, to name just a few.
Working together to represent many areas of diversity, equity and inclusion, NC State has led the way in combining diversity and equity functions to create productive synergy. For example, the four campus community centers collaborate to bring diverse and intersectional perspectives to each of the cultural heritage months throughout the year, and events such as the annual Diversity Education Week and annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Campus Commemoration draw from all of the units as well as campus partners to bring a university-wide focus to the programs.
States Interim OIED Vice Provost Sheri Schwab, “I am proud of OIED’s accomplishments in the past year. NC State was named one of Forbes Magazine‘s Top 100 Best Employers for Diversity, and we again were recognized with Insight into Diversity’s Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award. Clearly, we are on the right track and setting a great example for other institutions. However, we have much more work to do to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to succeed at NC State. I invite you to join us in this important work that enables us to capitalize on all of the talent and potential available to us.”
We welcome your collaboration. Visit our website or contact OIED at oied-communications@ncsu.edu if you would like to participate in our programs.
