The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity has announced that Mia Thompson has joined the team as the new program coordinator for Equal Opportunity and Equity. Thompson, who has a background in sexual violence prevention and education, most recently worked at East Carolina University as the programs assistant for the Department of History. During her time at ECU, she specialized in graduate student services and event planning. She also participated in several committees designed to increase support and awareness amongst staff personnel.
Thompson received her bachelor’s of arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is currently pursuing a certificate in student affairs in higher education through ECU. Her ultimate goal is to pursue an educational doctoral degree to better serve students and the campus community.
Thompson states that she was excited to be selected for the position after seeing the team dynamic and is drawn to the work that OIED pursues; she also has a background in multicultural advising and bystander intervention training from her time spent as a peer educator at Chapel Hill. She regularly partakes in training related to issues of diversity and most recently completed ASIST training for suicide intervention.
