The GLBT Center will host its second annual Week of Action from Monday, March 27 to Friday, March 31, 2017 with the theme “Recognizing Inequity, Practicing Solutions.” The goals of this week are to help students, faculty and staff understand different ways in which inequity is present within our society and to provide them with strategies and ideas to combat those inequities.

Community Memorial

The week will begin with the creation of a community memorial to name and remember the victims of police violence and learn about the systems and institutions that allow this violence to continue in our communities. The construction of the memorial will take place from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the lobby of Talley Student Union on Monday, March 27, 2017. Members of the Wolfpack community will choose to learn about an individual who was killed by police since January 1, 2017 and craft a posthumous dedication. This memorial will be on display in the Talley lobby through Friday, March 31, 2017. Visitors can choose to create additional posthumous dedications as the week progresses, and they can pick up resources and information about where to engage in further conversation about alternatives to law enforcement, de-escalation tactics and efforts to create more culturally competent and less-lethal police forces.

Sitting with Privilege

On Wednesday, March 29, 2017, the GLBT Center will present a new workshop call “Sitting with Privilege” from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in Talley Student Union, Room 4280. “Sitting with Privilege” is a two-hour workshop that will help participants critically examine the impact of their identities on their experiences, recognize the barriers they may (or may not) face depending on their identities, identify common behaviors that can perpetuate barriers for others, and explore ways to use their access and opportunity to create space for others.

Pronoun Awareness Campaign

Since the Week of Action aligns with Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV), the GLBT Center will host a Pronoun Awareness Campaign to raise awareness of an important issue impacting the transgender community. Stop by the lobby of Talley Student Union to prepare for TDoV by learning about the importance of pronouns and ways to support transgender students. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in the #GenderPronounAwareness campaign by getting their picture taken with their pronouns for social media and gathering posters to spread the word across campus.

Video Blogs

Finally, all week long the GLBT Center will be featuring video blogs of students talking about how and why they fight oppression and continue to stay engaged in social justice activism.
