Jordyne Blaise has been named deputy Title IX coordinator at NC State University. Blaise also holds the title of assistant equal opportunity officer at NC State and investigates complaints of discrimination, conducts diversity training and develops outreach and programming initiatives. Her new responsibilities include serving as the lead deputy Title IX coordinator, convening NC State’s Title IX Advisory Team, and investigating and responding to complaints related to Title IX. Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments of 1972 states (in part) that:
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
Blaise earned her Bachelor’s degree in English from Georgetown University in Washington, DC and her Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center. She became licensed in Florida and worked for the District of Columbia prior to joining NC State. Specializing in program development and training as they relate to civil rights law and policy, her professional interests include a focus on how intersectionality transforms notions of equity and diversity in public accommodations.
Blaise also writes for national publications. Recent articles include “Getting Real About Domestic Abuse” (ESSENCE online, November 5, 2014), which examines the topic of African American women and relationship violence, and “Kim Kardashian’s Nude Photos and Saartjie’s Choice: History’s Problem with Fascinating Bodies” (TIME online, November 14, 2014).
Vice Provost Joanne Woodard noted that “Blaise’s appointment underscores the university’s continuing commitment to Title IX compliance. With additional funding provided this spring by the provost, we will be able to enhance our outreach and training efforts for students and ‘responsible employees’ at the university.”
NC State has two other deputy Title IX coordinators who work collaboratively with Blaise on Title IX compliance: Dr. Lisa Zapata, vice provost for student development, health and wellness in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs and Michelle Lee, associate athletic director for compliance.
