To commemorate 30 years of the African American Cultural Center and its supporters, partners and friends, we invite our community to join our 30th anniversary celebration, “Creating Home: Through Time and Space.”
The Witherspoon Student Center is home to the African American Cultural Center, Student Media, and Military and Veterans Affairs. This building, named for Augustus Witherspoon three decades ago, carries a legacy of Black students, staff, faculty and community members finding a home at NC State. We recognize the importance of community with one another and stretch our arms to create more space for our thriving community.
African American Cultural Center 30th Anniversary Celebration Keynote
In partnership with Interdisciplinary Studies, the Women’s Center, Student Leadership and Engagement, the Wilson College of Textiles and the WISE Living and Learning Village, the African American Cultural Center announces Brittney Cooper as our 30th Anniversary Celebration Kickoff keynote speaker.
Acclaimed author, college professor, cultural critic, and activist Brittney Cooper, Ph.D., will speak at Talley Student Union Ballroom from 6–8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, 2021. The talk is open to students, faculty, staff and the community. Seating may be limited due to COVID protocols; please register and arrive early.
Cooper centers her research on topics such as feminism, racial equity and gender studies. She is the author of books such as Beyond Respectability, The Crunk Feminist Collection, and Eloquent Rage. Most recently, Cooper has been working on conceptualizing a Black feminist conceptualization of time, looking at Black diasporic thinking, movement and storytelling to consider the ways in which Black people create a home, transform space and shape time with their minds and bodies.
